Challenge:
The creation of Children’s Mercy Hospital’s Partial Hospitalization Program introduced a distinct design challenge, crafting an outpatient pediatric behavioral health facility that meets the stringent safety and therapeutic requirements typically associated with inpatient psychiatric facilities. This complexity was amplified by the nature of the program—serving pediatric patients who spend full days on site, including a significant population with neurodevelopmental disorders. These unique patient needs demanded a highly durable, secure, and supportive setting. At the same time, the program emphasized family involvement, requiring dedicated space for caregiver education and engagement within a limited 12,500 SF renovation footprint.
Solution:
To address these challenges, the design team incorporated full behavioral health compliance. Every material, fixture, and design decision was made with safety, durability, and positive patient outcomes in mind. Anti-ligature and tamper-resistant features were thoughtfully integrated to protect patients without creating an institutional feel. The layout incorporates spaces for family training and involvement, reinforcing the hospital’s commitment to holistic, long-term healing. The result is a purpose-built outpatient facility that functions with the rigor of an inpatient unit—while honoring the flexibility and accessibility of a PHP model.
