Pulse Design Group was honored to participate in the 2025 HCD Healthcare Design Expo & Conference in Kansas City, showcasing the firm’s work and thought leadership through facility tours, educational sessions, and an engaging presence on the expo floor.
Pulse Design Group hosted two facility tours highlighting recent collaborations with The University of Kansas Health System. The first tour featured the University of Kansas Health System Quivira Campus, a 70,000 SF medical office building redesigned mid-construction following a merger between The University of Kansas Health System and Olathe Health. Attendees learned how the design team quickly adapted the program, maintained construction progress, and aligned the facility with the goals of the unified health system.
The second tour offered a behind-the-scenes look at the University of Kansas Health System Emergency Department Expansion, a 49,900 SF addition and renovation that enhanced capacity and efficiency while maintaining uninterrupted patient care. The tour highlighted design and construction strategies that allowed progress to continue within a fully operational emergency department, ensuring safety and continuity throughout the process.
Pulse Design Group extends appreciation to project partners at JE Dunn Construction, Turner Construction Company, and Brack & Associates, P.A., for assisting with the tours, and to The University of Kansas Health System and NV5 for the opportunity to share healthcare design practices with a national audience.
In addition to the tours, Pulse Design Group presented three educational sessions at the conference, each focused on collaboration, innovation, and the impact of transformational healthcare design.
Adapt and Deliver: Managing Ownership Transitions in Healthcare Facility Design explored strategies for navigating ownership changes without disrupting project schedules. The presentation examined how design teams can reprogram facilities during construction, maintain open communication with stakeholders, and plan for long-term system growth. The discussion emphasized adaptability, collaboration, and strategic foresight as key components in ensuring continuity through change. Reimagining the Future of Behavioral Healthcare: Designing the First Kansas State Mental Health Hospital in 50 Years presented a case study on the South Central Mental Health Hospital in Wichita, Kansas. The session focused on purpose-driven design to create safe, therapeutic environments for both forensic and acute patients. Attendees gained insight into the importance of thoughtful, evidence-based planning to support safety, healing, and dignity for patients and staff.
Designing the Future of Care: A Simulation Hospital for Training Tomorrow’s Healthcare Professionals highlighted the development of a hyper-realistic simulation hospital for Missouri Southern State University. The presentation explored how immersive, adaptable learning environments can help bridge gaps in healthcare education and workforce development, preparing students to deliver high-quality patient care in real-world settings.
On the expo floor, Pulse Design Group Medical Equipment Planning connected with healthcare design professionals from across the country. Conversations centered on how strategic medical equipment planning supports successful healthcare design by aligning technology, clinical needs, and architecture to create efficient, future-ready care environments. The team was grateful for the opportunity to share insights, exchange ideas, and highlight how collaborative planning contributes to better patient outcomes.
Pulse Design Group is proud to have shared its work and expertise with the 2025 HCD Healthcare Design Expo & Conference and remains committed to advancing design solutions that support innovation, collaboration, and excellence in patient care.
